The Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decision to establish a federal university in Southern Kaduna. The union, which represents diverse ethnic groups in the region, described the move as a pivotal step toward addressing historical injustices and promoting socio-economic development.
In a press statement, SOKAPU President, Dr. Awemi Maisamari, expressed gratitude to the federal government for responding to the long-standing demands of the people of Southern Kaduna. “This is a welcome development that will undoubtedly transform the educational landscape of our region. It is not just about building a university but about bridging the gap in access to quality education for our youth,” Dr. Maisamari stated.
The union highlighted that Southern Kaduna has been underserved in terms of federal presence and investments, despite its significant contributions to the nation. The proposed university, they argue, will serve as a catalyst for economic growth by fostering innovation, attracting industries, and creating job opportunities for locals.
SOKAPU also underscored the importance of ensuring that the university project receives adequate funding and is completed within the stipulated timeline. “We urge the federal government to demonstrate its commitment by providing the necessary financial and technical support for this project,” the statement read.
Beyond education, the union expressed hope that the federal government’s renewed focus on Southern Kaduna would extend to other critical areas such as healthcare, infrastructure, and security. They called for the immediate implementation of plans to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, as announced by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Community members have echoed SOKAPU’s sentiments, with many viewing the university as a beacon of hope for the region. Students, parents, and local leaders have expressed their readiness to support the project’s execution and ensure that it delivers on its promises.
SOKAPU’s acknowledgment of the federal university initiative reflects a broader sentiment of optimism and a renewed sense of inclusion among the people of Southern Kaduna. As the region looks forward to the project’s commencement, stakeholders are hopeful that this development will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the region’s history.
